2.3.3) Soil Classification / United Kingdom

Because of cool and moist climate, the wetness and occurence of histic materials (peat and muck), lack of moisture deficiency problem, and tendency toward spodic horizon formation are among the main soil genetic features considered in the United Kingdom.

Soil Classification:

10 Soil Groups: Differentiated by general soil profile characteristics (kind and arrangement of horizons).

The Soil Groups are subdivided into 43 taxa called Groups: Differentiated according to presence or absence of diagnostic horizons and their composition.

Groups are subdivided into 109 Subgroups: Differentiated according to presence or absence of diagnostic horizons and composition of soil materials.

Subgroups are divided into Series: Differentiated according to differences in texture, profile contrast, origin, and mineralogy.
