Stalk Borer

WI-MN Cooperative Extension Agricultural Weather Page

Introduction

The stalk borer is increasingly a significant pest in fields managed with reduced tillage. Eggs are laid during late summer and fall in grassy areas adjacent to cornfields, then hatch in spring. Movement from these areas into corn fields first occurs at about 600 degree days (calculated by the sine method with a base of 41 F), and continues until about 900 degree days are accumulated.

Schedule

Map is updated daily at about 11:30 am, from mid-April through mid-June, depending slightly on the season.
