WasteNOT Organic Byproducts Mapper

By-Products Database
We've developed a unique interactive database of by-product availabilty and characteristics to facilitate distribution and use of organic wastes in the state.

There are a number of economically important industries in Wisconsin that generate large amounts of organic wastes every year.  Such wastes are either land spread, land filled or processed for other uses.  In most cases, the potential for their beneficial reuse, particularly as soil amendments, has not been realized.

The By-products Database will promote greater reuse of these organic by-products as soil amendmentsIf  you have organic by-products to sell or distribute, need materials for producing soil amendments (or animal feed, animal bedding or biofuels) or if your business can use organic by-products as soil amendments, this database will provide you with the location, availability, and physical characteristics of these materials in the state.

For another example database, see the Beloit Business Materials Exchange - an on-line clearinghouse that matches manufacturers and other businesses that need materials with companies that have reusable, surplus or by-product materials available.

The By-Products Database will contain

  • Chemical, physical and biological characteristics of each by-product

  • Annual amounts and timing of by-product production per location

  • Locations where by-products are produced and used on land

  • Current fates (land spreading, landfilling, processing for soil or other uses)

  • Potential for blending with other organic by-products and creating value-added soil amendment products

  • Recommendations for land spreading to maximize beneficial use and minimize negative environmental impact

  • Relevant research, bibliographies, and contact information

The major organic by-products we have identified in Wisconsin include biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment facilities (POTWs), cheese manufacturing residuals (whey), animal manures (from large confined animal feeding operations or CAFOs), cannery wastes, meat processing wastes (from slaughtering and processing facilities—offal, paunch manure, viscera, feathers, etc.), and  wood-lumber mill wastes (sawdust, C&D waste).

We hope this database will promote partnering among manufacturers, processors and end users to enhance opportunities for beneficial land use of organic by-products in raw, blended or processed forms.
