Teaching and Research
My major research interest is in development of improved nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) management techniques for crop production that will enhance profitability for producers and minimize adverse environmental effects associated with nutrient losses from cropland. This work emphasizes studies to identify management practice effects on P losses in runoff from cropland and more accurate prediction of corn N needs. Current projects in these areas include evaluation and development of diagnostic tests for crop N requirements and studies of N and carbon transformations affecting N availability in soils. Other current research interests are: long- and short-term nitrogen fertilizer management and crop sequence effects on nitrogen availability and soil nitrogen and carbon cycling; and improvement of corn nitrogen recommendations through use of soil-specific response data. Work to evaluate the effects of tillage, manure additions, and soil P levels on P runoff losses is also underway.
Frequently, my soil fertility research addresses research needs or crop production problems identified through contacts with Extension audiences. Transferring applied research results to production recommendations for farmers and agri-business is a key objective. Current activities also emphasize education and training for State and Federal Agency personnel involved with implementing nutrient management policy on farms.
My Extension program focuses on communicating research results and soil fertility management recommendations to farmers, agribusiness representatives, county extension agents, and agricultural consultants. I offer individual consultations with Extension clients and provide educational programs at local, area, and statewide meetings, field days, workshops and conferences. I also prepare fact sheets, Extension bulletins, and newsletter or press articles containing current research results and associated recommendations. Cooperation with state and federal agencies and with multidisciplinary university groups to develop nutrient management recommendations consistent with efficient production and environmental protection is also a significant Extension activity.
I teach portions of two modular courses on nutrient management: Soil Science 333 - "Nutrient Management: Horticultural Crops," and Soil Science 334 - "Nutrient Management: Agronomic Crops." I also periodically contribute to the graduate level soil fertility seminar.
