Teaching and Research Overview
Prior to starting at the University of Wisconsin in August 2006, my appointment was in the Environmental Engineering program within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts. I have successfully obtained funding for projects involving hazardous waste site bioremediation assessment, safety and handling issues associated with biosolids, source tracking methodologies for microbial contamination of drinking water sources, and tools for watershed management. The thread that weaves through out my research program is the application of sound microbial principles to understanding and finding solutions to this seemingly diverse group of environmental problems.
My research and teaching at the University of Wisconsin will focus on applied environmental microbiology. Specifically, the emerging field of microbial source tracking. This specialty has applications to drinking water, wastewater, biosolids, agricultural wastes and more. I will be teaching a graduate course on pathogens and indicator organism systems for environmental applications and participating in SS 132 by teaching the unit titled "Water and Life."
