The Startup/Shutdown Randomizer
Well, hackers gotta hack, and although this little utility is pretty
simple-minded, it does work.
Basically, the idea is that it'll play a different WAV file for you
every time you start or exit Windows.
Very Detailed Instructions:
- Select (or create) a directory for the files.
to download randsnds.exe to the directory you picked in step (1).
- Use the MS-DOS command line, or the "Run" command in Windows,
to unpack randsnds.exe, as follows (DON'T FORGET THE "-D"!):
randsnds -d
- The directory should now contain "random.exe", "shutdown.wav",
"startup.wav", and two subdirectories ("startup" and
"shutdown") containing WAV files.
- From the Control Panel (Start menu, then "Settings"),
select "sounds".
- Set the "start Windows" sound to "startup.wav"
(you'll probably have to browse to the directory, or type in the
full path to it). Likewise, set "exit Windows" to
"shutdown.wav".
- Create a shortcut to "random.exe" and put it in your Startup
folder (the one that Windows looks in for programs to execute, not
the one with the WAV files that you just made). You should know that
wherever you put random.exe, it will look there for its "startup"
and "shutdown" directories, so just copying the EXE to
Startup won't work.
The initial "startup" and "shutdown" sounds are
a quote from Yoda and Wile E. Coyote falling off a cliff, respectively.
I just put a few sound files in the archive to keep the download times
down, but i have LOTS MORE if you want 'em. just put the WAV
files into the appropriate subdirectory, and they'll get used.
I Want More Sounds!
Ok, here they are:
Contents.txt: listing of the contents of
the following files
SMALSTRT.EXE: about 0.5 MB of little startup
sounds
BIGSTART.EXE: about 1.7 MB of 100K-plus
startup sounds (one is half a meg by itself!)
SMALSHUT.EXE: about 0.4 MB of little shutdown
sounds
moreshut.exe: some more shutdown sounds
morestart.exe: more startup sounds
1198star.exe: even more startups, 0.9 MB (5th element, others)
1198shut.exe: even more shutdowns, 0.7 MB (various)
